How much webspace do i need for my site(blog)?

by Sai on December 22, 2008

Most web hosts lure you into plans that offer unlimited web space that cost more than what a  limited plan would cost you. But the question is, do you need those unlimited plans?

If you’re sure in what you are going to write, how long are you gonna keep writing and approx how many pages you will be writing, then it isn’t a tough job to find out the amount of space you require.

I’ll give you my case for simplifying this. At this point of time (excluding this post), I have used about 15.01 MB of webspace.Which includes 5.4MB of wordpress installation, some themes  consuming 2MB and some fantastic plugins that surely worth 6.6 MB.

So in total 5.4+2+6.6 = 14MB. The remaining 1.01 MB is what all my 17 posts took . You can have a glance at the average size of my posts. So 17 posts took 1MB in my case. Which means

170 posts–>10MB, 1700 posts–>100MB.

Ufff, big numbers right? When would I complete 1700 posts? 2 posts per day takes me 1500 days and that is 4.1 years.

So I would say that 500MB is enough to develop your site over years.

Another example, open a word document and fill one full-page with some stuff and see the size of the document. Thats the same space that it occupies if it were on your hosting server (plus some plugins that operate for each post).

And in case you’ve put your whole life into your blog and post 10′s of posts in a single day and ran out of space, there is always an option to change your hosting plan.

So ‘start small go BIG’ may be a wise decision.
