How to remove OGA notification in Windows 7?

by Sai on February 12, 2010

Got the message ‘This copy of Microsoft Office did not pass the Genuine validation test’?

Let’s see what you can do. Note that you may (or should) apply this method only if you think you are falsely receiving the notification (It can happen sometimes, even my Steve Ballmer signed signature edition of Windows 7 Ultimate once gave me a message that this Windows is not Genuine :) ). If it is other wise, you should consider purchasing a genuine copy instead.

In the whole article I’ll be assuming that you have a Windows 7 OS (32 or 64bit). If you have any other OS, this article gives plenty of advices.

This notification occurs when you install the windows up date KB 949810. Unlike other updates, that can be deleted by visiting the installed updates folder (path: Control Panel – Programs – Programs and Features – Installed updates), you cannot do so for this particular update.

Disable OGA notification in Windows 7

To disable this notification (considering that it’s a false positive), head to the system32 folder (for 32bit OS) or SysWow64 folder (for 64bit OS), which normally resides in the Windows folder in the system drive (path: C:/ – Windows – system32/SysWow64).

When you are there, find these files (Use ctrl + f to make the search easy)

OGAAddin.dll

OGACheckControl.dll and

OGAEXEC

Those are the files that run the test to check whether your copy of Office is Genuine or Not. In order to disable the notification, you could either delete those files or instead, on a safer note, rename the files into something entirely different (that which doesn’t coincide with any other file). For example, you could rename then as somesample1.dll, somesample2.dll and somesample3.exe (make a note of the original names somewhere before renaming)

Renaming is recommended since if any thing entirely goes wrong, you could at least bring it back to the previous state by giving them their original names.

There are also other ways of achieving this (by messing the registry items for example), but those could restrict you from updating or upgrading your Office pack.

By following the above way, you can safely install any future updates available for your Office pack.
