Change Operator without changing mobile number – From Oct 31

by Raghav on August 12, 2010

If you are one of those mobile users who is furious on continuous delay in implementing the Mobile Number Portability (MNP), here is some good news. TRAI Chairman JS Sharma has said that the MNP will come into effect from October 31, 2010 and there will be NO further delay what so ever.

December 21, 2009 was the first deadline that was given to mobile operators to implement MNP which was then postponed to March 31 and then to June 30, 2010.

Since the operators weren’t ready with the infrastructure needed to implement MNP, it was again postponed. Now, if TRAI chairman’s words are to be believed, users should have the MNP option starting from October 31.

BSNL has already said that their Infrastructure is MNP ready. TRAI also warned telecom operators that if their networks are not MNP compliant from September 1, 2010, they will not be allowed to start any new commercial service in any part of India from then.

What is MNP?

If you are wondering what this MNP is all about, it is an option that a subscriber can use to change his mobile operator (for example, from Vodafone to Airtel) without changing their mobile number. You can also change from GSM to CDMA (if your mobile permits) or change between GSM and CDMA with in the same service provider, like changing from Tata Indicom to Tata Docomo.

A small fee of up to Rs.19 (porting charges) will be charged for each change. More rules are yet to be known but we are sure that there will be something like if a subscriber has moved to another provider; there will be a lock in period with in which they cannot move to a different provider.

Update: More details on MNP, the process, Application forms, lock in period and time taken for porting

does my plan change if i shift from reliance CDMA to GSM( i have 50 paise call rates for lifetime)

Ankur

what about MNP among different circles? if i move from circle X to circle Y will i be able to retain my number?

Madhu

Of course. Once you’re changed into a different network, you ARE a customer of that new Operator, where ever its services exist.

Yohann

I heard that when MNP comes out it will only be for postpaid users, at least in the initial stages is that true?

Pradeep

well nice to know but , i have a CDMA reliance phone and would like to change to GSM service , now tell me , the service provider numbers are different example – reliance has 93310 xxxxx as starting number and Vodaphone has 90510xxxxx , now how will i be able to retain my number staring with 93310 xxxxx if i shift to vodaphone ? or is it that the service providers number will be same and i will be able to retain only the last 5 numbers of my mobile ? any answers to this would be helpfull

Sriraj

Your entire ’10 digit phone number’ will be yours. When you shift to GSM, you’ve to have a GSM Mobile (change your handset)

shankhar

if you change service provider, from GSM to GSM or CDMA to GSM or GSM to CDMa
a. what will be the lock in period with the new service provider,
b. if customer changes the service provider well within the lock in period
what is the safety clause for the service provider/ what is the penalty for the customer.
c. My question on the above point is to ensure level playing field for both customer and service provider.

Neeraj Mehta

I hate idea. Its customer care department is really customer careless department. In every email they write ‘sorry for inconvenience caused’ instead of solving the problem.

Rahul Sharma

I too hate VODAFONE! Their Customer Service is one of the worst!
Waiting for MNP.

raghu

hey dude!
i dunno frm wich circle u r.
vodafone is quite good in AP, good network signal
& the best offers tooo

TATADOCOMO

Mithun

How many will change? This won’t change the world, that’s for sure.

raghu

as per estimation by TRAI 1 in 5 subscribers is going to port their numbers as soon as they introduce the MNP.
once u have ported ur number, have to wait for 3months to port to another service….

Pavan

If MNP comes, Airtel should be very careful. When ever it introduces any new plan it’ll only limit its benefits to Airtel to Airtel banking on its large user base.
If it does the same after MNP comes, you can imagine what happens.

Ram prasad

can we change from CDMA to GSM if our mobile support both?

shankhar

Yes you can change from CDMA to GSM with the same number provided
your current CDMA handset has the capability to take GSM.

Sandeep

I’m damn sure this would be postponed too. Else, I’m moving from this **king BSNL to Airtel

shankhar

Hi Sandeep
You can be rest assured the MNP is effective 1st Nov-2010 zero hours, as per
Hindu news dated 18th Sept 2010. But before selecting the new service provider
behave like a woman when she selects silk saree, you have TATA Docomo, Reliance GSM, Aircel, Airtel, Voda, MTS,
My recommendations you should look at service providers who have both capabilites
in terms GSM & CDMA. ( for eg) TATA & Reliance.
