Google affiliate network review

by Sriraj on January 30, 2009

It was on 30 June 2008 that Google announced its affiliate network as Google affiliate network (GAN). Previously it used to be Double click Performics and now after Google has acquired it, it became GAN. But has it done any good to its previous referral system within its Adsense system?

It may have done well to its business in terms of revenue but the typical user friendly interface was badly missing.

I do not know how the connectcommerce.com site was before Google acquired it, but I must admit that at this instant, its only average and no where near the Google standards.

The page load time is too long to be a Google product. Google has admitted that they are putting efforts to move the site to google.com domain. May be that will solve the page load issue. The readability too is an issue and you as a publisher will go places to find your appropriate link within the site.

Assumptions rose at the time when Google acquired performics that ‘is this going to be as big as a CJ?’ Well, again it may be in the future but now, CJ is as mighty as an old lion compared to GAN.

But having said all these, Google in these 6 months of beta has done some patch work to make the site more user friendly and reach your point with minimum number of clicks.

Some of them include:

  • View ads for multiple advertisers at a time by showing recently published ads from all advertisers or only approved advertisers
  • Filter the multi-advertiser page by advertiser category
  • Filter the multi-advertiser page by hiding specific advertisers from view
  • View a list of all ads for each of their joined advertisers
  • Filter single and multi-advertiser lists by ad type (banner or text), size, promotion type and expiration.

It also began giving rankings to Publishers by placing a tag ‘rising stars’ beside their username so that the Advertisers can easily target quality publishers.

Recently GAN also started user forums for publishers to ask questions regarding GAN, and answers could be given by other users should they know it and also few Google employees who keep a regular watch on the forums.

So, do these developments make GAN the next CJ?

Oops, I forgot that I commented here. This topic is still relevant though, so better late than never.
I Wouldn’t consider it cheating. Their program rules tell us that we can be cancelled if no sales are generated up front. In theory, you may not make a sale for 6 months, get cancelled, then, boom, you generate your first sale, but it’s of no use to you if your account has been cancelled.
The moment your cj logon is frozen, all banners, links, etc. that point to a cj merchant should be deleted from your websites to avoid generating a useless sale.
This is the only thing about cj that I dislike. If your account is cancelled cj allows you to simply reapply.

Yes.
CJ suspends your account if you do not generate income within 6 months. Unfortunately, CJ does not inform you. Instead you find out when you can no longer log in to CJ. Even though they cancel your account, all links remain active and still generate revenue for them, while you do not get your share, as your CJ account is canceled. Bummer!

Should we call it ‘cheating?’

Does GAN cancel your account after a specific amount of time if you don’t generate any revenue like CJ?

No.
BTW does CJ do so?
I also have a CJ account but not using any of those tags since months. Still my login works there.
