Don’t save passwords in Browsers, Read why?

Do you save your passwords in the Browser?

Let me answer that first. Yes, I used to save my passwords in the browsers, but not later than the moment I learnt that they weren’t safe there. It was like welcoming a robber by handing over our safe locker keys. I have tens of passwords, all being different, saving them in my firefox/IE/Chrome used to be so easy and help full. But safety should always be before comfort.

Immediately after learning that they weren’t safe in the browsers, I made a list of all my user names and passwords and saved it in a MS word file. It would be disaster if anyone gets hold of that word file. Hence I saved the word document with a password (huh, another one…). I remember most of the passwords (It’s very tough since they are random strings of numbers and letters) but I keep on changing them at least once a month. Now every time I visit my favourite website or any email account, I would open the word document using that master password, and copy paste the required user name and password in the appropriate field.

If you have a very good password, and by good password I mean having at least 12 character lengths that includes numbers, letters and special characters you can forget about changing password that frequently. Over a period of time, of copy pasting, you will eventually remember the password.

But like me, if you have tens of passwords, then it could be tough. And exactly for that purpose, there is an App called Anypassword.

AnypasswordThere is a free version and a pro (paid) version of it. But even in the free version you get the thing that is needed the most, strong encryption of passwords, using AES/MD5 algorithms.

The App is really small in size and downloads and install in seconds. Again you have to take the pain of loading all your stuff once and then leave the rest to Anypassword.

It neatly arranges all your information in a tree format and has a search option that can quickly search the combination you require.

The Pro version can also be uploaded into any removable disk like USB’s, MMC’s etc, that make your passwords stay with you, no matter where you are.

Hello

Agree with the above comment..

and want to add on one more thing… though we know that saving passwords in the browsers in unsafe in case anyone other than you also has access to that particular machine. Otherwise, I don’t know why is it unsafe!

Secondly, copying and pasting the passwords from the word file (or any other file) is even more insecure than saving passwords in browsers… I am sure of that! There are techniques through with the content of your clipboard can be easily stolen!

So… good luck!

Is this article about dangers of saving passwords in Browsers? or about a Software called AnyPassword? Who ever reads this will not convince about the both. I visited this post to learn why saving passwords in browsers are unsafe. Not about how to save passwords in a software or word file. I didn’t get the answer but article pointed to something else which I’m not interested.

This article is not justifying both the intensions. Instead you would have written two seperate articles and linked each other that would be better and more impressive. With first article to convince people not to use browsers to save password and later a solution for that problem would be better. Hope you take it in a positive way.

Suggestions are always welcome Ravi (?). In fact, the article on why you shouldn’t save passwords in browsers is in line of my scheduled posts and will be published soon. Hope to see you back then.
