Opera Mini could soon be Ubiquitous on mobiles in India

by Narayan on June 18, 2010

In an effort to maintain its leadership in the mobile browser segment, Opera, the maker of the popular Mobile browser Opera Mini and Opera Mobile, is in talks with several Indian Mobile manufacturers and Telecom Operators to bundle Opera Mini with their products. Indian mobile manufacturers such as Micromax and Karbonn mobiles are already seen to offer Opera mini as a web browser by default in all their mobile phones.

Deal with the Telecom Operators could include the promotion of Opera mini browser on the Operator’s WAP portals, Airtel Live for example, and the introduction of  data plans if Opera mini is exclusively used for browsing the web.

Opera mini is a tiny application that can run on any mobile that supports Java. It can work fairly well even on a 2G network by using Opera’s compression technology that reduces both the data transferred and hence the page load time.

It’s already a common scene in India where the cheap Dual sim mobile manufacturers are seen promoting their mobiles citing Opera mini as one of the feature.

Mobile phone users who do not have Opera installed already can visit this page on Opera and install the mini on their phones (requires the phone to support Java)

According to a latest report from Statcounter, Opera mobile browser maintained a good 26.68% market share (World wide) in mobile browsers in May 2010 followed by iPhone (19.97%) and Nokia (14.69%).
