OlivePad Tablet – With Camera, Flash support and USB port

by Raghav on July 23, 2010

Did the lack of a camera, a USB port or support for flash made you not to go for the iPad? What if you get all those three features in a tablet that is also a Smart phone and run’s on the Google’s Android Operating System almost at the same price as an iPad or in fact slightly less?

Well, take your time to decide but here is OlivePad (what’s this thing about ‘Pad’, I do not know), which is said to be a Smart phone cum Tablet that has a mini USB port, support for flash and has a Camera (a 3MP pixel one at the back and a front facing VGA camera for Video calling). Olive Telecom’s Chairman Arun Khanna says at the release, ‘OlivePad is not a me-too device. It has features of a Smartphone where as iPad is essentially a computing device. We offer voice, video and cameras. Our product is a combination of 3.5G smartphone and a tablet. We see this as a big differentiator’. He also adds that they expect to sell up to 100000 units in the next six months.

Just looking at the device, you don’t feel that it is made for day to day computing but rather looks like the mother of all Smart phones with a 7 inch display.

Other features of OlivePad include 3.5G HSUPA support, Wifi, Bluetooth, e book reader, GPS with turn by turn navigation and all those Messaging and IM Android Apps that are compatible with this display size.

OlivePad is priced in the range of Rs.22000 to 25000 and will be available Country wide in Croma stores.

I have one trouser that has a big enough pocket to fit this Smartphone cum tablet. Looks like I may buy one but the only negative thing with these Indian makers (it’s good that they are venturing into these latest technologies, but) is their lack of professional support.
Had enough with one HCL service guy recently, I had to teach him what’s what in a laptop and how I connected it to my Wifi network.

Looks cool but if the turn by turn navigation mentioned is about the default Android Navigation, sorry but it doesn’t work in India. I would assume they have inked a deal with third party providers like Mapmyindia et al
