Mundu Mobile TV App can stream live TV, even at GPRS speeds

by Sai on December 8, 2009

Mundu, a Geodesic limited brand that already has products(mostly free to use) dealing with mobile phones like Mundu SMS, Mundu Speak, Mundu Radio and Mundu Messenger is shortly coming up with another product targeted at the growing mobile phone users in India. Mundu is planning to introduce a Mobile TV application that can stream live TV onto the GPRS enabled handsets of the users.

Now you may ask that when one cannot properly (uninterruptedly) stream Youtube videos on their PC with broadband (say up to 512kbps) connection how can a GPRS mobile stream live TV? Mundu, in this case is said to have developed a proprietary compression technology that significantly reduces the bandwidth of the video signal, without actually compromising on the quality.

So you get the same experience as watching the videos on a TV but at a lower bandwidth transfer rate.

Mundu

To use this service, when it comes live, you need to subscribe monthly to the Mobile TV service and of course need to have a data plan with your mobile service provider; an unlimited plan would suit the best.

With increasing wifi hotspots in the metros and 3G around the corner, this should prove to be a good product (Similar: Tata Photon Broadband TV). But the success of this product extremely depends on how economical the subscription rates will be. Considering that the recent Tata Photon TV charges Rs.7 for a single channel for a month, this application from Mundu should be placed in the similar price range per channel.

Yeah, it its network independent. So you dont need a vodafone or airtel.
As long as you have gprs it seems to work.

I’m watching it on e51 with wi-fi at work. The quality’s awesome.
:)

Ramkumar

Sounds cool . how about the picture quality, i reckon if they can play at lower bandwidth , then they must have an average quality.

Sriraj

No that’s where their compression technology will be used. At least they did say that.

Sanjay

Also, I’d like to see the application coming out without making any exclusive deals with a specific mobile Operator, which unfortunately has become fancy these days.

sriraj

Yeah, blame it on Apple and its iPhone :)
