Anti virus(and anti theft) App for Nokia 5800 Xpress music

Mobile AntiVirus App for Nokia 5800 Xpress music (also works for other S60 3rd and 5th edition)

If you have a smart phone, then keeping it free from viruses is to be looked after seriously. In my case, I have a Nokia 5800 Xpress music mobile (S60 5^th edition) and I recently installed an Anti virus-cum-Anti theft application to keep it safe.

Now, some people say that if you have a Symbian OS powered mobiles, especially the advanced 3^rd and 5^th editions of S60, you really don’t need to have an Anti virus as the Symbian OS is intelligent enough to keep the dirt away.

Some where in the line I tend to disagree with that belief. Since we are dealing with wifi enabled devices (and hence the Internet), we are obviously prone to vulnerabilities. Also, we install many third party applications to make our mobile look more pretty. Sure, that the Symbian OS warns before you install any 3^rd party application, but do you care to read the warning before you install? It may always be the usual yada yada but its worth having a read at it once.

Recently, I had to put a different sim card (than the one I use daily) on my 5800, and as soon as I did that, I found a difference. I observed that the phone wasn’t starting as usual but re starts itself (before it boots completely) 3-4 times to completely boot.

From my previous experience with the Nokia 6600, I knew that it was a worm that has to be dealt with.

I first tried the 7 day trial of f-secure mobile anti virus (cum anti theft) app.

The installation was quick and easy. The app was around 1.4mb that I downloaded directly into my mobile and installed automatically.

Once installed it will either ask you to choose the trail version or take a paid subscription (40 euros/year). Choose the 7day free trial and let the application register your product with the server (You may be asked to restart your phone to complete the installation).

I ran the scan, immediately after the boot, and the little worm was traced out. I deleted the infection (recommended action) and my 5800 was back to normal. Now that my trail version will expire in a day, I may (or will) decide to buy one year subscription of f-secure mobile security App.

Another feature of f-secure is the Anti theft feature which has options like Remote lock with which you can lock the phone with a single SMS (you must choose and SMS alert number and a lock code to either lock or unlock the device), remote wipe (that erases all the personal data).
