Using airtel 3G with the 2G pack of Rs.98 every month? You’re not the only one who does, enjoying high speed data transfer, paying just a small amount. We’ll, hard luck with that trick from now. It seems airtel has (finally) realized that they had to do something to prevent 2G users accessing high speed 3G network; and it has done it.
From one week or so, what used to be a routine 2 – 4Mbps download speeds (with the same Rs.98 plan), is now only good for 0.1 to 0.2 Mbps. Clearly, this is the normal 2G speed that you’d get on an EDGE network.
It happened to my colleague who uses airtel and he’s really angry on the network now; understandably so. Even though his phone still shows ‘H’ (HSDPA) symbol, the speeds just won’t go over 0.2Mbps.
You could do two things now, one, subscribe to a 3G plan (will cost you a bomb) or two, put your hand on your heart and say ‘I know this would happen sooner rather than later; I enjoyed 3G speeds for few months; 0.2Mbps is really good enough for Rs.98; now let me get back to work’.
