by Sai on March 24, 2010

It’s definitely not a bright sight to see all your lovable SMS (text messages) being erased when you format your Nokia mobile phone. Especially if all those SMS are from your loved one’s that are stacked in your inbox for months, if not years.

If you are a frequent forwarder (who forwards all those sardar jokes to your friends as soon as you receive one), you obviously will not have any SMS left to forward once your format your phone. Fortunately, there is a way through which you can save all your precious messages to your computer (PC).

Backing up messages to your computer

What you need?

Your Nokia mobile phone

A suitable Nokia PC Suite application installed on your computer (If you don’t have one, install from here ). Almost all major Nokia phone are compatible with the PC suite Application.

A USB cable to connect your phone to your computer

The Process

Once you have downloaded the PC Suite application and installed it, connect your phone to your computer in PC Suite mode Saving SMS from phone to PC using Nokia PC Suite and open the Nokia PC suite App on your computer.

You’ll find the Messages picture as shown in the figure. Click on the icon to see all your messages (Opens the Nokia Communication centre).

While you are there, click the Edit option in the horizontal menu at the top and choose ‘select all’ to copy all your messages. Then click on ‘File’ and then ‘export’ to save a copy of all your messages in CSV format to your computers hard disk.

Restoring your messages

Once you are finished with your formatting work, set up the system in the same way and then choose the ‘import’ function from the ‘File’ Menu to restore all your messages back into your Nokia phone.

Backing up your entire phone

In case you want to save every bit of data from your phone, you should rather use the back up function available in the Nokia PC Suite. Using that, you can backup Files from your phone memory/memory card, contacts, calendar, notes, messages, bookmarks and other user settings and easily restore all those with the restore function.
