Who doesn’t have a passport these days? But one needs to ask whether the current passport issue process can be simplified or not?
Various proposals have come in the time but apparently, none of them seemed to be worth for the Passport department to implement them. And they still follow the same old method. You need to approach a regional passport office to submit the passport application along with required documents. The next stage will be a police report in which a police office will visit the address mentioned in the application form to verify everything is correct and that the applicant has no police cases (if he mentioned as ‘No police cases’ in the application). After which the report will again be sent back to the passport office and then the passport will be allotted and despatched by EMS Speed post courier.
If you live in Cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore etc where the regional passport office is located, you can expect the whole process to be completed with in 20 days, if other wise it may take over a month.
Al though the process of application isn’t changed, at least the Passport Status can now be known with a single SMS.
Earlier, you had to visit the Passport website to know your passport status.
Now with the SMS procedure, all you have to do is send an SMS to the number 9493555577 (Only for Andhra Pradesh applicants) and get your status report.
When you apply for passport in the passport office or anywhere else you’ll be given a file reference number. You have to send that reference number along with the year of application for eg. 08 or 09 to the above phone number and a reply SMS comes with the status report with in 12 seconds (that’s what it promises)

I have applied for passport renewal through Hyderabad RPO office on 29/03/2011. Now its been close to 5 months, since I have applied for passport renewal. For last two months, I am getting below mentioned status “It is to regret that due to unavoidable circumstances the dispatch of Passport has been delayed and will now be dispatched in a week’s time” But passport has never been dispatched.
I went to passport office, but could never got to talk to any of the officers. No one answers phone, email in Hyderabad RPO. I also dropped multiple email / called up PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER (PUBLIC GRIEVANCES) in New Delhi. They told me that they will do follow up, but there has been no action.
Just because of this passport delay, I have to cancel some of my very important meetings / trips. I need passport really urgently.

The passport office in hyderabad is waste of money. we have applied for passport in Dec 2009, but the passport is still not dispatched. when we enquire, they will not even respond properly. we need to change all the old fellows over there. Dont know what the officer there is doing
