Latest Nokia 5800 firmware upgrade? To install Ovi maps

Very recently I came to know that Nokia has made the walk and drive Navigation feature free to all Nokia Smart Phone users (for life time). This is made possible by introducing the latest version of Ovi Maps (previously called the Nokia Maps).

I have one Nokia 5800 Xpress music, besides my iPhone, that I bought around June of 2009 in India.

I went to the download section of Ovi maps and felt very happy seeing 5800XM listed under supported mobiles.

Phone not compatible

However, that happiness of mine didn’t last long. I seriously wanted the drive feature which I previously used as a 7 day trial period and fell in love with it. There was an instruction that the phone software update may be needed to be able to install the latest version of Ovi maps and that the firmware version needs to be V31.0.008 and above. I checked mine (*#0000#) and found it to be V30.0.011. I tried seeing if there is an upgrade available by hitting the ‘Check for Updates’ key under Options but it failed to find one. I wanted to double check if my mobile is showing the correct firmware version by looking at the product code (remove your battery and find one) and entering it here.

It shows the same version as the latest available. But I see that the latest Firmware available for Nokia 5800 Xpress Music is V 40 in European countries.

What’s wrong?

By checking with some geeks I got to know that it’s mostly got to do with the country and the Mobile Operator. I’m currently on Airtel (Btw, check out the free 100MB data offer from Airtel for 3 months, I’m loving it) and I have no clue why the update shouldn’t appear on it’s network.

Guys, if you have some knowledge on this, please shed some light. Also, if you are on a different operator, what Version are you seeing on your device (particular to Nokia 5800XM)?

  1. hey guys u can do it at home but u need to have the ovi suite latest one which is 3.0.0.284 beta atleast and it does not hang while tryin to sync or i didn’t face any problems as of yet or u can try goin to nokia care and doin it……any gud luck…the new ovi maps is really good i am using it since 2 and half years i used to pay for navigation but now its free…..

  2. Dont scold vodafone or any other network providers for the lack of 5800 firmware unavailability in india. Most of the 5800 bought from india is having the product code 0575590 which cannot be updated through Nokia software updater or through OTA.

But two other ways are there to get the upgrade for these product code or any product code phone which is facing this problem,
    1. Just visit your nokia care centre nearby and wait for 2 hrs. They will do it for you free of cost, if your phone is still in warranty perios. Otherwise Rs.250/-
    2. Change the product code of your phone using NSS software (NOTE: Changing product code will void the warranty, This should be done only in your own risk) After changing product code, then connect through Nokia software updater and get the V40 update, which is more stable, stylish homescreen, kinetic scrolling, navigation and much more….

    Best of luck!!

  3. I am a Vodafone customer in Mumbai. The software upgrade is not working on my phone too; I am still stuck with V30

    • I am a Vodafone customer in Delhi. I am stuck with V30 and the software upgrade is not working on my 5800 Xpress Music. It is strange thst on Indian Nokia website they write: Free Navigation on your Nokia. Forever.

      • It’s probably meant for N97, as I see various advertisements in News papers today regarding this free Navigation. It’s high time that an update is made available for Nokia 5800 here, as most people use this rather than N97.
