New year SMS rates -Vodafone, RCom, Tata Docomo

If you are a Vodafone customer, you have a bitter pill to swallow (I’d like to see zoozoo‘s swallow this pill). While Airtel and RCom have announced that they won’t be increasing the SMS and voice call rates on New Year’s eve, Vodafone on the other hand have stood firm and will continue to see December 31 as a ‘Blackout day’. A Blackout day as seen by Mobile operators is the day of the year, when the discounted SMS and call rates will not be applicable. Some days include the New Year and New year’s eve, Diwali, Dussehra, Friendship days etc.

As it is already 31^st today, if you want to send short (or sweet) messages to your friends and families, you will have to wait till January 2, as Jan 1 is any way a Black out day. As it is now, if you send an SMS in these two days from Vodafone number, you will be charged Rs.1 for local SMS and Rs.1.50 for National SMS.

Aircel too will see Dec 31 as Blackout day but you have some relief here that the SMS will be charged at only 25ps (local and national) on January 1, 2010.

The network that made some noise in a recent Blackout day, Tata Docomo, will also charge 50ps per SMS (It said ‘Why pay extra for Special occasion?’, now ask the same Tata Docomo customers). However, it will still continue to offer its Diet SMS, where 1ps will be charged for 1 character (up to a max of 15 characters).

So just type ‘Hpy Nw Yr’ and you’ll be charged 9ps
