National Do Not Call registry

by Ashwin on August 12, 2010

Getting those Unwanted marketing/ spam SMS or Calls and wondering how to stop them? Here is the answer, register in the National Do No Call Registry maintained by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Department of Telecom.

Simply SMS as START DND and send it to 1909. In case if you want to block such calls being made to your landline, you can dial the same number 1909 from your landline phone. For some reason, if you want to receive such calls and SMS’s again, you can SMS as STOP DND.

These STAR and STOP commands are a bit tricky and often users confused between the two. By sending an SMS as START DND, you are registering for the DND (Do Not Disturb) service to stop those unwanted calls and messages.

On the other hand, by sending an SMS as STOP SND, you are de registering your number from the DND service and hence you will again start receiving those Nuisance calls and SMS’s.

In case you are doubtful about your DND status, you may visit this page and enter your phone number to check whether it is in the DND directory or not.

As soon as you send the SMS, you will receive an SMS with the registration number (or Unique Identification code) that you should make a note of for future use.

How to file a complaint

Please note that it may take up to 45 days for your number to be included in the DND directory from the date you requested. If you get further Messages or Calls even after 45 days, you should call your telecom provider’s customer care and register your complaint which should include, the number of the caller, date and time of the calls or the message (if it is an SMS). This must be done with in 15 days from the date of receiving such Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC).

You must also ask the customer support person to provide you the complaint registration number for further use.

If you are still getting those messages and calls, there is a website to register complaints on mobile operators that is coming soon.

If you go on putting your mobile number like this on the Internet, then no matter if you’re registered at NDNC or not, you’ll be getting such calls and SMS’.
I’ve edited out your number.
