The long awaited 3G data cards are here from BSNL in partnership with Micromax mobiles. Micromax mobiles will develop the data card exclusively for BSNL’s 3G operations and these data cards, will be available in both HSDPA and HSUPA variants in USB format. As a started since BSNL has already started its 3G operations in northern India, these data card will be first offered in cities of Shimla, Lucknow, Agra, Patna, Durgapur, Jallandar, Dehradun, Jaipur, Ambala and Haldia.
Micromax MMX 300G review
The Micromax MMX 300G data card in HSDPA Variant will offer a speed of up to 3.6Mbps DL and 384 Kbps UL.
In areas where 3G is still not available, the EDGE network of speed up to 237kbps DL and 118kbps UL or GPRS network with speeds of 85.6kbps DL and 42.8 Kbps UL will be on offer.
Any standard 6 pin SIM card complaint with 3GPP 31.101 and 31.102 can be used with this data card. The USB data card contains an Internal Antenna and will be Auto Installed by the Vista/ XP Operating System.
The SIM and Data service simultaneous operation is an addition to this data card where the SIM can also be used to send and receive SMS’s at the same time when it is being used for Data purposes.
The price of this Data Card along with BSNL (MTNL for metro’s) Kit is approximately Rs.3500.

hi manish, dis is shib shankar.u wrote that ur data card speed is 7.2 mbps.but its giving u the max speed of 230 kbps.there is no problem with the date card. it is your server that gives u that speed.so contact with your service provider.

I have been using this bsnl 3g micromax MMX 300G usb modem,i purchased it in siliguri for Rs. 4200 for the device and have been using its 2g network,the speed is better than what it used to be with a beetel usb modem for 2g,i just checked the bsnl 3g network too,the speed is amazing,infact, better than broadband,the youtube video did not take any time to stream,it was like, being played back from the hard disc, the monthly cost is Rs.450 for approximately 1gb(download/surf) for 3g service though.Anyway bsnl has Rs.175 unlimited upload/download for a month for 2g service that is quite good for home users.

huawei is a very gud modem for speed browsing. U can get upto 500kbps downloading in any 2g sim also. Its browsing is very fast. so it can give much more speed in 3g sim.U can buy it by closing ur eyes

I am using BSNL3G data card for wireless broadband from the past one month, i.e from November 2010. I am from Bangalore and the signal strength is very good in my area.
Initially I was getting speeds upto 4.5 mbps.
But from 8th December, am observing the speeds are reducing drastically. Am just getting 800-1200 Kbps or 0.8-1.2 Mbps hardly.
Do you why is this happening? Is there any usage cap in this BSNL unlimited scheme for 3G…..? I am using Rs. 4200/- 6 months unlimited plan.
Or is it a network problem with some network device down?

Do you want to know if your going to migrate to some other telecom service provider in the future will you be able to get the same speed?
If this is your question then, it depends on the strength of the signal in your area, for that particular service provider. If the 3G signal is good and the plan you have choosen is fine then you can get the expected speeds.
But be clear on one thing, the speed of the network or service provider is independent of the device or data card. If the data card says it can support upto 7.2 mbps download, then its not necessary for any user to get 7.2 Mbps. It means its just a capacity of the device and the rest totally depends on the network.

I am from Bangalore and stay near Majestic area. I too bought a BSNL 3G with a
data card after Diwali. The signal strength in my area is almost 98-100%.
Considering this, I get an average speed of 1.5 – 2 Mbps.
The maximum file download speed which I observed while downloading a file form Oracle website was 360 KBps. Note its KBps and not Kbps with a small ‘b’. So that was truly amazing.
The least speed observed in the same site was 120-140 KBps with a slight fluctuation.
Tor—- downloads with 4 file simultaneously, the total bandwith for download nearly reached 390-480 KBps, and upload was 1-1.5 Mbps.
This is truly amazing provided u have sufficient signal in ur respective areas.
The only doubt I have here is whether the 4200 Rs, plan for 6 months is really unlimited or is there any cap on the usage which they call as “Fair Usage Policy”.
One more question please.
Am using Huawei data card, model no e1752, which I purchased for Rs 3800/= Is this the correct price? Or have I paid more for this ?

I have gone through the rest of the discussion on this page . I find most of us facing the same problem, and due certain points not clarified by Customer care persons lot of confusion pervails.
Recently I obtained Huawei E1550 Data card with BSNL unlimited GPRS pack rs 274/- after consulting other users of this device I setup device .It started with”bsnl speed 3.6 Mbps ” I considered my self lucky , but when i tried to log on to Gmail the wait was long enough with a note flashing on the screen “u r using a low speed connection try the html version “.
The Antivirus also attempted to download the update and the connection was frequently dropping I observed the total Mb DLwas increasing but i was not able to get any Mb.
I consulted the mobile dealer and got an aircel sim expecting better speed but no luck . After searching the net (at a cafe) I came to following conclusions:-
-The speed of the network depends on the distance of BTS tower from your location.(beside the power supply situation in your area; In my area I am here at Lucknow outer area; )
—The bsnl network frequently switches between WCDMA/and EDGE network mode once selected a network type in the net setter ;if the supply trips at ur end or at tower side it takes too long to disconnect the connection and on reconnect it responds the device is absent or in use and does not connect unless U completely close the connection and remove the device from the Pc and setup again. If u ar not observing the signal bars/or dl/ul speed chart on the net setters screen u wont be able know that the connection has fallen off. —————The only thing visible is “internet is unable to open the Page”
-The speed varies right from A spike with 200kbps and 0.0 to no signal.and the wait continues.
I have not tried the “Photon plus” device I feel my area is unfit for comfortable home surfing leave the on line games or large file down load. better rely on the old cafe.till some private operator like lays fibre line to ur house.
So Dear Shaun, be content that you have a data card net connection better have a unlimited plan and just continue to try /search and watch if the things improve in the coming days.
just work on whatever speed u get and when the “net” works.

inside your micromax software. you can select the network selection mode and select the manual and after search you can find more then 1 network then you can select cellone umts network you get always 3g speed.

download and costs you 2500/-.
Buy Huawei e1752 USB device, it has a capacity of 7.2 Mbps download, and uploads upto 2 Mbps and costs Rs 3000/-
This does’nt mean u will be getting the said speed just based on the devices, its just the capability of the device, so in future if BSNL or any other telecom service provider gets better speed than 3.1 Mbps then you can continue using the same devie, u need not buy a new device that time, to exploit the full speed provided by the respective service provider.

Based on the research I have done and reviews I have read, though Miromax and other brands like Capitel, Teracomm etc are Indian brands, I have come across people complaining about these cards in some way or the other. Am not saying these brands are not at all good, but relatively of what exists in the market I noticed Huawei is better as of now.
There are a few reviews which I read saying there were problems in some other models of Huawei too, but still overall I can say Huawei is better compared to all.
So I suggest you to buy an unlocked Huawei e1750 or e1752.
I don’t have much idea about e1750, as far as I know it has the same features as e1752 with a little less UL speed, you can get more details from somewhere.
Regarding e1752 which am using it is said to have a DL capacity of upto 7.2 Mbps and an Upload capacity of the device is said to be of 2 Mbps.
And Huawei though being a Chinese based company has a good brand name and is an old brand of course. I think that’s why the price is a little higher than other brands.
I had got this card from K K Data Services located in Marathahalli. This fellow’s no is
9945811511. He’s a very cunning and shrewd fellow. Be careful with him. I was made to pay him 800 bucks more for the card I purchased since I exchanged it with him and had no other choice.
First I suggest you to call him to your home for a demo to check the signal and test some direct downloads preferably from oracle website. He’s a nice fellow in this manner, he will send his sales man to your home and you can check the signal and download speed.
If everything goes fine, then I suggest you to take e1752 for 3000 Rs.
I paid 3800, and got to know today that I had surely paid 800 Rs extra and it’s available in e Bay and other places with the same orange logo for 2800 or 3000 Rs.
You somehow bargain him and he will surely give it. In case he says no, then you can buy in RT nagar, the name of the shop I don’t remember, but these RT nagar fellows will not come to your home for a demo etc. You can call just dial and get to know the shop.

I just bought a micromax 3G usb modem (MMX 310G) and a bsnl prepaid connection with 274 recharge.
I use it in UP-West, apn is set to bsnlnet.
However, it gets disconnected after every 2-3 minutes, especially while downloading.
I am unable to download even a 2 MB file

Was it 10-15KBps or 10-15Kbps?
Notice the difference on the letter B. Upper case B is lower case b multiplied by eight.
10KBps = 10×8 = 80 kbps.
if it connects with UMTS then the max speed you can get is 384kbps. if it is connected with HSPA then can go upto 3.6mbps.
How did you check your speed?
Did you check it with ‘www.speedtest.net’ ?

i suggest you to buy 350g as it’s band is higher then the others.
by using BSNL 2g unlimited data plan you can get the speed of 3g .
i live in orissa and i am using bsnl since 2006 .i am using my nokia n73 initialy and the speed was around 20Kbps but after using micromax 310g speed has gone to 200Kbps .you will not belive that i have downloaded more than 50GB per month.
if you want to buy it than call your nearest micromax service station as they could give the address of the retail outlet of micromax where you can buy that product.
This is somewhat Misleading coz you CANNOT get 3G Speeds using a 2G network. Since BSNL is GSM based, the maximum speed you can get on a 2G network (whether or not you are using 2G/ 3G Data card) is 144Kbps.

And plz let me know, how do you measure the realtime speed exactly, do you use a software like BWMeter/DUMeter ? The speed you mentioned is in KiloBytes/sec or Kilobits/sec. I am using BSNL GPRS with the mobile phone modem and getting NOT more than 4 KiloBytes/sec. speed.

hi sourav!i am from sodepur too.all 3g usb modems are having a backward compatibility with 2g networks.so you can use your 2g sim cards with the 3g modem.and as far as 3g modems are concerned each 3g usb modem has a different upload & download specification. some have 384 kbps upload & download.others have 3.6mbps download & 384 kbps upload.7.2 mbps download & 384kbps upload.the latest generation of usb modems and some nokia handsets like the nokia 6700 slide provides data speeds upto 10.2 mbps download & 2mbps upload.hope that satisfies your query.

I asked the customer executive for the ‘Unlimited Downloading’ then she clarified that it is ‘UNLIMITED BROWSING’ but not ‘Unlimited Downloading’. But as per my knowledge and experience, the “Browsing” itself is downloading or receiving of data. Also when I was using my 3G SIM with 18 Gb browsing plan(introductory plan for first 3 months) I was able to download different files like music, .exe, etc. from internet and the downloading and browsing both where counted in data received.
Please clarify my doubts with the difference between unlimited browsing and unlimited downloading. Will I be able to download unlimited (any kind of file or data), if I go for BSNL 3G unlimited browsing plan for rs. 1499/- per month? I’m asking because I find this plan to be higher in rate and I’m in urgent need to get an unlimited plan.

I’m very sure that the Customer Care person whom you talked to has very little knowledge on Internet. As you said one can’t differentiate ‘Browsing’ from ‘Downloading’. Even while you are browsing, you are downloading the content from a remote server to your local computer.

You mistake a little bit… The customer care officer told you right…. In any unlimited plan only surfing is free not any file downloading…. It is right that surfing is including downloading and uploading, but there you don’t download or upload any file directly, you only surf the pages…. Some times the content provider fixes some prices for his content… So if you are going to download that you have to pay… Now if the ISP told you unlimited downloading, then you don’t have to pay the money as they pay for it…. So they never use the term unlimited downloading, use surfing, not to pay for what you download…

if your area is under BSNL 3g coverage area than go for BSNL 2g unlimited data plans ,because you don’t need 3g as your monthly usage is 5GB also 2g is cheaper .i am using bsnl 2g in mmx 310g and my monthly usage is over 50GB.

Hey dude just buy a mmx 300G data card from bsnl and u get blazingly high speed internet access upto 3.6mb/s to 3.8mb/s.. And one thing dude don’t go for in my opinion . Go to bsnl office and talk about the data card and u clear all ur opiniun and then buy.. I m getting 3.7 to 3.8 mb/s with this hsdpa mmx data card coz m house was nearly bsnl 3g tower that’s why i get high speed..

I recently bought a MMX 310G usb modem. I am having 3G sim, but converted to 2G to use cheap unlimited plan. But after buying this the speed is pathetic. In my area GSM/GPRS has full tower. But I am getting average 20kbps or even less than that speed through this. I tried to connect to HSDPA/UMTS, but the very poor signal in my area – Basirhat (West Bengal, North 24 Pgs). Sometimes it is good, but 90% times it is not able to connect.
Please suggest what to do to get high speed in my area.!!!
Also I am having a strange problem with MMX data card. After using some time if I try to change the Network mode it is going to infinite loop to search for the network. I had to restart the computer to resolve it. Anybody have any suggestion on what is this problem and how to resolve it without restarting?

Before purchasing I also hpe that I would get speed at least around 256kbps, if not greater than that. Do you know how to check – how far is 3G towers? Like Reliance broadband+ has their own site showing the map of it. Do you know if BSNL has such thing? though I don’t expect it from BSNL.

Today I have bought a BSNL 3G Data SIM Card with bundle offer of 18gb data download in 3 months. I didn’t buy 3G data card from BSNL as the Personnel over there told me that I can use this sim with my 3G enabled Nokia mobile phone and the average speed will be around 3.6 Mbps.
Now when I tried to connect to internet on my laptop using that 3G SIM and my Nokia mobile phone through Nokia PC suite, it is not being connected via data cable but I’m connecting to internet using bluetooth. And the problem is that the speed tested on “speedtest.net” fir d/l speed is around .36 Mbps in place of 3.6 Mbps and the u/l is .18 Mbps. Also the actual download speed for any file is around 38 Kbps. I’m doubtful that it is because of my mobile phone being used as bluetooth modem or the network of BSNL 3G which there in my location but not that good?
One thing more I wanted to know that if I buy any 3G data card from BSNL (of any vendor like M/s TERACOM LTD, MicroMax, Huawei), will I be able to use any other 2G or 3G SIM Card from other service provider (like Reliance, Tata Docomo or Airtel) in that BSNL provided data card as they have “BSNL 3G data card, 3.6 Mbps” printed on them.
And the last thing I wanted to know that which one is better among the different 3G data card offered by BSNL as they have variation in their specification and difference in prices. Teracom offers a Linktop/LW272 with 3.6 Mbps and it is single band data card. Another model from Teracom is Linktop/LW273 with 7.2 Mbps and it is tri band. Both of these are around rs. 2500/-. Micromax has MMX 300G 3.6 Mbps, single band and MMX 300G(3) with 7.2 Mbps speed and is tri band data card. They are priced around rs. 3500/- . And Huawei has three models. E156G with 3.6 Mbps is single band whereas E156 HSDPA with HSDPA/7.2 speed and E176 HSDPA with HSUPA/5.7 speed are tri band data cards. These Huawei cards costs around rs. 3500/-.
Anyone with factual and experimental knowledge, please respond, at the earliest to my doubts with the solutions to my above mentioned problems, as I’m in urgent need of a high speed internet connection.

Hi, those speeds that you mentioned are really slow for a 3G network and Bluetooth could be a reason for that as you said. Any way, that 3.6Mbps speed is the maximum that a 3G Network can give. If everything is alright, you will ONLY get speeds up to 1.8Mbps or so. Again, there are different types in 3G too, like 3.5G (category 6 and 9), which you’ll normally find in metro’s, that’ll obviously have a higher speed than 3.6Mbps.
You didn’t mention what Nokia mobile you are using, but I recommend you to use Nokia PC suite or Ovi Suite (if compatible) to access Internet. These will give much higher speeds.
Coming to bands, yes a tri band data card/mobile will have more speed but then, this is limited by Network. If your network has a max speed of 3.6Mbps, it is of no use if you take a Triband data card. Mobiles like iPhone have a Quad band network but they can offer same speed as a Dual band only data card/ Mobile in a 3.6 Mbps network.

Finally I have received my Huawei e176 from ebay yesterday. But still it’s not of much use because i’m getting download speed of around 0.1 Mbps and upload speed of 0.05 Mbps.
with this Huawei usb modem the software to connect to net is Mobile Connect. There I have created profile and and have entered APN for BSNL but the connection is EDGE BSNL only but not 3G BSNL.
Please tell me how to select 3G or UMTS network in this software.
Urgent help is required.

i’m able to connect to 3G BSNL network now and my avg download and upload speed on speedtest.net is 1.4 Mbps and 0.5 Mbps. It’s working good now. If there is any other way to get it even more better your suggestions are welcome.
One thing I wanted to know that there is no option for making voice call using my Huawei e176 modem, in the software Mobile Partner (it’s there in modem EPROM only and default one). I enquired this with the merchant from I bought this modem and he replied that this feature is locked and I will be able use it when this is unlocked using DC unlocker software and for this I will have to pay some amount for the software to the site which sells it. But I’m having a software from where I can get the unlock code using the IMEI no. on the modem. This unlocking software gives two diff. nos., one is unlock code and another is flash. Now the problem is that I don’t know how to flash the EPROM or unlock the modem and its features.
Please help me out with a solution for this.

Its really bad experience that u are fooled with 3g datacard.
Getting a 3g range is not up to the device wat u use, but its all abt the tower location and the signal strength in your locality.
U can still use the device to connect with someother sim card for accessing EGPRS.
Call the customer care of someother network after getting the SIM , connect with the settings. This would provide u a better speed – again depending on the signal strength. So i wud advise u to find which mobile service provider has got a very gud signal range in ur locality and try with that.
Else, borrow different service providers sim card from ur friends . Almost all the mobile service providers have launched one day GPRS connection , as cheap as Rs.5 / per day. activate that and test the connection speed in your PC. Then go for the best among them.
Defenitely dont try with BSNL again, since the network strength is already very weak – i hope u wont be getting proper speeds in 2G too .

Hey srinvas ur nokia N70 is 2G phone and so u can’t find 3G speed with ur phone.but if ur network service is gud.u can find max 512 kbps through ur EDGE network but no 3G.OOPS

I am from W.B. At present I am using 2G. Here EDGE network and 3G service both are available. Presently speed is showing 460.8 kbps but I know this varies on modem type. But whatever may show, the downloading speed is very poor, it is 2-3 kbps only !!! Opening of any portal takes a lot of time too.

i have recently purchased micromax MMX300G usb modem, with BSNL 2G connection.
speed is not an issue..
the main issue is that device is getting dissconnected after 10 – 15 minutes of operation ……
one of my friend also getting the same problem.
the signal strength is ok in my area ,also i have tested my device in various locations n its still pursuing the same problem.
i cannot resume my downloads with IDM as after every 10 -15 min it is getting dissconnected.
my friend is using huawei modem n he is facing no such problem….

I think, there is no need to unlock in the phone. All necessary information lies in the SIM itself. Just buy a BSNL 3G prepaid for Rs.179. (sim Rs 59 + first recharge coupon Rs 120)It has a usage value of Rs.20.

Try to use Nokia 3G recent mobile sets. I can share my experience that one can get internet connection without a PC and when a PC is available then it can be viewed or downloaded in it. Recent Class32 HSDPA enable set can download constantly from file hosting sites at a speed of 200kbps and original sites like microsoft it gives 350-390 kbps actual download speed in 2G connection. I have been using this bsnl 3g micromax MMX 300G usb modem,i purchased it in siliguri for Rs. 4200 for the device and have been using its 2g network,the speed is better than what it used to be with a beetel usb modem for 2g,i just checked the bsnl 3g network too,the speed is amazing,infact, better than broadband,the youtube video did not take any time to stream,it was like, being played back from the hard disc, the monthly cost is Rs.450 for approximately 1gb(download/surf) for 3g service though.Anyway bsnl has Rs.175 unlimited upload/download for a month for 2g service that is quite good for home users.

Its not possible to make video calls from any data card. At the max you can make normal voice calls if the interface has the calling facility.
I am using Huawei e1752, and was able to make voice calls from my laptop,
with ‘Mobile Partner’ which acts as an interface for connections etc.
But there is no option to make video calls.
Does this means that if a vendor is selling Huawei e1752 by claming that it can make VIDEO CALL, it means that vendor is lying ???

Sure Rahul, if anybody is advertising, claiming that you can make
video calls in Huawei e 1752, then its just a simple plain lie.

Today, I saw in the settings for e 1752 card, there was some options to select the camera, resolution, speed etc in the video call settings
in the interface client software for 3G connection, in my laptop.
But I couldn’t find any place where there was some facility to initiate or dial for video calls. So am not sure whether this Huawei e 1752 supports
video calling or not.
The cost of e 1752 is 3800/- which I paid.
The actual market cost I heard is 3500/-
