Indian railways online train ticket booking/reservations and current PNR status check
PNR is Passenger Name Record which is marked as a record in the database of any travel related Computer Reservation system. In a huge country like India it is virtually impossible to book a ticket in a train just before days to travel excepting Tatkal service. You have to book your ticket way ahead of your travel date and plan it accordingly. But at times, it may be difficult to find any availability in the trains we want and we book the ticket even when we know that there is a long waiting list keeping hope on others to drop down. In that situation it is very important to keep track of your PNR status. Indian railways being the largest employer in the world has certainly improved in the customer care department and now has provided many ways to keep track of our PNR status.
If you have your ticket ready with you now, you can check your PNR status by visiting this site and typing the PNR number in the given box (PNR number will be at the top right side of your ticket)
You also have the separate railway enquiry number for PNR status which is 139. You can call 139 from any BSNL, MTNL landline to check your status.
You can also send an SMS to 139 to know the PNR status, Fare enquiry, Seat availability etc.
For PNR status enquiry, just type PNR <space> Your 10 digit PNR number and send it to 139.
For seat availability, type Train <Space> Train number <Space> Date of journey in format of ddmmyy <Space> STD code of ‘FROM’city <Space> STD code of ‘TO’ city <Space> Class <Space> Class type and send it to 139.
For example, I wanted to travel from Hyderabad to Delhi then I would type
Train 2236 230409 040 011 2A G and send it to.
Here 2236 is the train number, 040 is the STD code of Hyderabad, 011 is the STD code of Delhi and 2A is the class (AC 2 tire).
Premium SMS charges apply. Mostly it is Rs.3 per enquiry.
This SMS service is currently available from Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, Aircel, BPL, TATA and MTNL mobile phones. BSNL and Reliance will be added soon.
So next time you think about Indian railways, then think about 139.
Apart from this SMS service it also has the 24 hour customer care number 23340000 (Prefix Delhi STD code 011 if calling from outside Delhi) and an email enquiry at care @irctc.co.in
