Indian Railways has provided the facility of getting discounted tickets for students for their educational purposes and also for unemployed youth for their job purpose.
To avail the concession of being a student, on has to produce the Student concession form along with the purchased ticket (only i-ticket or a physical ticket) to get discounted ticket.
The concession form of India Railways will be available at all Institutions where you’re studying (or in most cases it is a simple letter written on a letter head (of your college or school) to the Railway regional head with ‘Student concession application’ as the subject and the purpose as the body) which needs to be filled completely and signed by the head of your Institution must be presented at any nearest Railway reservation counter along with the i-ticket and normal Journey cum reservation ticket.
The difference between the Original journey cum reservation ticket price and the new revised fare for student concession (less Rs.20) will be refunded to the student.
Note that the Student concession can only be availed in Sleeper class and 2nd sitting (2S) I tickets.
You can get up to 50% discount as a student (till 25 years of age) and SC/ST (till 27 yrs of age) student up to 75%.
The reasons for travel could be a travel from his home town to his place of study or to appear for board exams in another town/city or Educational tours in groups.
Unemployed youth under the age of 35 years can get 100% discount on the basic fare of 2nd class (or 50% concession for SL class) in Express trains while attending an Interview of Central/State Govt companies. Do note that most PSU’s refund your ticket money after you attend the interview. So in case you have already claimed concession, you cannot get refund again from the interviewing company.
For this, you need an attested copy of call letter of concerned company and a copy of application form submitted by the candidate while applying for that particular job.
Free Passes (Monthly Season Tickets)
Boys who are studying till class 10 and girls studying till class 12, who need to commute in trains (up to 150 kms) every day can avail monthly season pass for free. Do note that free passes can only be availed for travel in 2nd sitting in normal ordinary trains and cannot be used to travel in Mails, Express or Superfast trains.
For other students, who are are in college, can avail discounted Monthly season tickets or Quarterly season tickets which will be up to 50% less in charge compared to normal travel.
These tickets can be had from the station where students will take their daily train to school or college. You need to carry this pass along with any ID proof every day.
