Like most other states, there is a dedicated Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) website for West Bengal State. Voters in the state can visit the website and know all about elections in the state. The first and foremost thing to know is the Electoral Photo Identity Card or EPIC, which is now essential to cast one’s vote. No other ID proof will be allowed; even for new voters.
Under the Citizen services of the website, one can search for their name in the latest electoral rolls. You can search by your name, your residential address or if you have an EPIC, you can directly search using EPIC.
The result also shows you the constituency and ward you belong to along with the Polling booth allotted to you for voting.
EPIC for New Voters
If you have attained 18 years of age by 1 January of the year of elections, you are eligible for voting.
To get an EPIC, one must approach an Electoral Registration Officer in your district HQ with approved ID and address proof’s. Once he verifies that there are no other voters on that name and address, he will include your name in the voter list. Also, through out the year, various campaigns will be conducted by the CEO of WB to get New Voters in to electoral rolls. You can also register yourself then.
Now, to get an EPIC, you must approach a Permanent EPIC centre and get your photo taken. Once its done, you will be given a date on which you should go back and collect your EPIC (this will not be sent by post). Like voter registration, occasionally, photo taking program will also be conducted and voters can get their photograph taken then.
Mistakes in EPIC
It’s possible that there are some mistakes in your EPIC. Your name could be wrong, or your parent’s name or address could be wrong. If this is the case, then you should first check whether the same mistake is printed in the official electoral roles. If yes, then you need to start from first. If no (that is, your name is correct in rolls), then you should just get your EPIC replaced, for free of cost.
The site to be used to check electoral rolls is this.
