You’ve seen Dish TV and Sun DTH. There is also Tata Sky and there is Airtel Digital TV. Not to forget the Reliance Big TV. And there’s also another DTH which is unlike all these and completely free and that is the Direct to Home service of Doordarshan, the DD Direct plus.
Now if you think you’ve got enough of DTH’s in India to choose from, there’s another one waiting in the fray, Introducing Videocon D2H.
Before we go into the details, let me say the facts. For a DTH company to be successful the first market it has to consider is the South Indian market for its variety of Regional channels. People here are not going buy DTH to see Star Plus or Zee TV (not to take it straight) but they want their Gemini’s, Sun’s first.
But unfortunately, Videocon started its operation from North and western India (Except Mumbai). Wish it enters the South Indian market sooner than later.
Going back to the different DTH products that we talked about in the beginning, it was interesting to see how each company marketed their products. If Airtel marketed Digital TV by stressing on its Digital quality image, Tata Sky concentrated on its Customer service through Asin commercials. Sun DTH proudly said that it’s the leader in the industry and Reliance asked us to live a BIG life.
Now coming to Videocon, which by the way is busy promoting its new change in Logo (change is happiness 😀 ), is pushing itself in to the market by offering various types of D2H products.
Here you can choose from a Satellite LCD, a Satellite TV, a Satellite DVD and a Satellite Box.
A satellite LCD is an LCD television which is DTH enabled. The LCD’s available are of 19” and 32”. A 19” satellite LCD costs Rs.13490 and 32” LCD costs Rs.27490.
A satellite TV is similar as Satellite LCD except that the LCD is replaced by a normal Flat screen TV.
A satellite Box and Satellite DVD are just like any other DTH service which consists of a Dish and a Set top box. A satellite Box costs Rs.1690 and a Satellite DVD costs Rs.2590.
The packages are divided as Gold package and Diamond package and as an introductory offer, when you purchase any of the D2H products listed above you get few months of free Gold or Diamond packages depending on the D2H product.
The Gold pack contains 115 channels and costs Rs.1600 for 12 months and the Diamond Pack contains 160 channels and costs Rs.1500 for 6 months (or Rs.2900 for 12 months)
Here are some famous channels that you’ll only get in Diamond pack,
AXN, MTV, Times Now, NDTV 24X7, CNN IBN, CNBC TV18, POGO, NICK, NEO cricket and NEO Sports, Zee Sports, ESPN, Star Cricket, Star Sports, Ten Sports, Star Movies, HBO, Sony Pix, Star One.
And there a condition that (is obviously written in very small characters) says that some channels are under testing and some channels may not be available in the free period. So you better Ask what you’d get before you make a buy.
Update: In recent times, Videocon forayed in to two major fields, Telecom and DTH. It has failed miserably in telecom and is looking to close its books there. But come to DTH, it seems, it has made some great inroads. In 2012, Videocon added most number of subscribers in the entire world (not just india) than any other DTH company. Personally, I haven’t seen many individuals use Videocon DTH but every other hotel I visit uses a Videocon DTH. So it could be possible that corporates are its biggest customers.
