It’s powered by Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium OS with Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor T 4300 (2.1GHz)
RAM is a mere 2GB for this price of Rs.32640 where other major players in this range like Dell Inspiron has at least a RAM of 3GB or 4GB in some models.
Hard Disk is 320GB, a DVD Super Multi Drive is provided. Intel WLAN 5100AGN will do the work for providing you the Wireless Broadband experience.
The Monitor is again disappointing which is an age old 14” WXGA (1280 x 800 resolutions) and not the current sensation, LED screen.
A 4 in 1 card reader will be the interface between your HD photos in your camera and your laptop. The weight is more on the higher side like the Bulky Dell laptops at 2.4 kgs (without the adapter). When HCL is marketing the products as ‘mobile’ excitement, they should have concentrated on decreasing its weight too. Where is the excitement carrying a bulky 2.4kgs laptop on my back, certainly 2.4 kgs is very heavy for anyone to carry while travelling.
The Battery life too isn’t great at only 2.4hours where one could expect it to be up to 4 hours of idle time.
If there are any gaming freaks out there then this one would come in good for them. HCL ME K4180 comes with 10000 gaming hours.
Other pre-installed software’s include HCL leaptop companion DVD, EC2 System recovery Utility and McAfee Antivirus.
As said be fore this one is priced at Rs.32640.
Please do not buy a laptop from HCL. I am going through a lot of head ache since 2 months. My HCL laptop was dead the 3rd day I bought it and it hasn’t been replaced yet as promised even after tens of mail exchanges.

I suggest u to prefer any other brand than HCL. HCL service is horrible. My laptop is not working properly and i hv not got any fruitful response from its service centre they r just delaying it. I strongly recommend u to buy any other brand.

trust me there is no such heat dissipation engineering or whatever people were talking about…it has a horrible battery life maybe thats how the weight is 3kgs lol
dell has a nine cell battery that gives a back up of at least 4hrs (i have seen it and worked on dell)
now whoever is the HCL employee how do you clean the heat sink….can any one please suggest ways…cause the HCL support centre is pathetic..even that HCL TOUCH key doesn’t do anything..

bought HCL LAPTOP fro croma mumbai on 19-06 – 2009. packed up with in one month.machine serial number 3094AX316093. was left with HCL INFO SYSTEM for repair and got back the laptop after 6 weeks.System has packed up again with same problem ( N VIDIA CARD DEFECTIVE ) cannot be repaired and mother board to be changed according to experts. Paid 35000-00 in june 2009 and valued at Rs2000-00 under present condition. DO NOT BUY INDIAN PRODUCT (HCL).

Do not go for a laptop with more than 3 GB of RAM. If you are using 32-bit operating system, then 1-1.5 GB will be unusable. So with 3 GB of RAM price of the laptop will be less.

I have read the comments posted here. There has been lots of heated exchanges. People giving their views about HCL and other brands. Some in favor of HCL and some in favor of other brands.
The bottomline is those who have faced problem with a particular brand will use derogatory remarks about that brand and those not will be appreciative. Thats how it goes. Its all about one’s experience with it.
Even I have recently bought one HCL Leaptop B3863. I went to the store thinking of buying an HP/Compaq but ended up with HCL. Every product has got its own drawback and advantages. There is no product in the world which you can say is the best. Even if there is a better one it will not fit our pockets.
The only problem with we Indians is that we are slow in catching up with latest technologies.
HCL has so far done a commendable job. The only thing they need to do is customer survey and try to rectify all the issues on time with their customers.
I myself has worked with Dell Technical Support for USA and I know what inferior quality of computers and peripherals Dell ships to its customers. You can’t imagine the amount of dissatisfied customers Dell has in US. There has been lot many times that they ship refurbished products even if the product is under warranty.
Look I am not accusing Dell here. I just want to stress on the fact that every company/every product has its own advantage and disadvantage. Afterall we are not dealing with a Chinese product my friend.

I got a HCL ME from my Institute,it has 2 GB RAM,2 GHz Pentium Dual Core,160 HDD,256 MB Graphics In-built and the rest of the normal features that come along with…It’s working fine for me,sound is good,battery back up is good too and Windows 7 works smoothly also but i feel bad about one thing,it’s the USB ports,there are only 2 and those are also very close to each other,at times it becomes hard to connect two USB devices together at the same time…rest is fine,i have not faced any technical issues yet,right now m using Windows XP SP2 on my ME.

HCL is really value for money. When I purchased my ME I got so costly gifts (7000/- of Reebok brand). HCL supplies so many softwares, antiviruses and others that I really surprised. And also I investigated the some parts of my ME and found the DVD drive is from Sony, HDD is from Western Digital (king of portable HDD – CNET comment), 2 MP camera from Microsoft, Battery from Sanyo and the carry bag is from Targus (naam to suna hi hoga). And the look is superb. High glossy body (like costly HP laptops). I run NFS game in my ME and it runs smooth. So I feel really happy after buy my ME.

Yes but the Ctrl Key must be the left most key, as we have used to it, Let the Fn Key be placed, second from left after the Ctrl Key.
Yes, it should be that way. Ctrl key be the left most, then some key (could be fn), then windows, alt and space. This is the conventional placement and that should be followed.
In HCL ME they have placed a Fn key, in the place of Ctrl Key.
If the same task is assigned to a flea, it will place the Fn key next to Ctrl Key.
This is good evidence that HCL people have brain less than a flea.

The ctrl key should be there some where, mostly next to the ctrl key. This is common these days considering how crampy the keyboards are getting. Since the function keys also act as multi media keys in some ‘makes’, they are putting a fn key on the keyboard.

One of the most ridiculous condition is ’’ the payment can only be refunded partially if stocks are not available or the delivery can not be attempted due to any circumstances’’

You are telling HP is No.1 & DELL is No.2. That is OK. They are there in International market. For your information they are having good products in other countries and for indian market they are not having that same product. HCL is the indian company selling laptops in INDIA only.
The worlds No.1 & No.2 you have quoted brands are not released ROHS complaint laptops. HCL only launched India’s first ROHS (Full ROHS) certified laptops. Pls refer net for what is ROHS.
Somebody had worried about support. First of all pls note this. HCL is the only company having direct support offices nation wide. others are opearting thru dealers or support available in selected cities only. HCL recently announced HCL TOUCH 24*7 free support for life time even if it warranty or not in warranty. No MNCs offering these kind of support.
For Hardware Drivers, HCL is already having a site for all drivers (‘http://ftp.hclinsys.com/’ ‘http://downloads.hclinsys.com/)’
Pls note one thing. HP’s inkjet printer is costing 2,500/- only. But do you know the cost of Encoder strip , cartridge, PCB???? It is more than tripple the original cost. MNCs are cheating Indians like this but we are supporting them.

i am from rourkela , this is to inform all of u that hcl me n3862 which is called p38 leaptop is a verygood peice and it is available for a price of only Rs- 36400 at best dealer price and is till date found to be best after purchased at the above price , of course it has a free windows 7 upgrade .
I also recommend acer 5738g with ati 4570 hd radeon(its newer edition)nvidia is older one , 4 gb ram , 320 gb hdd,core2duo 2.2ghz code name penryn , when purchased for rs-41000 . digit has recommended it as best laptop in the month october. i had used both the laptops and finally found out a great diffenence that hcl has a processor as intel mobile core2duo which is internal named as t6670 model when i used cpu-z where as acer show t6600 ,i found out hcl bios controlls the speed of the core and acer is working in overclocking mode by default that means i think then hcl is faster than acer
There are many reasons i can cite for avoiding HCL laptops and going for other oems like DELL, HP, Sony and so forth. i have a dell laptop so i am going to compare with it. i could have used hp also as they too provide decent support
1) Driver support-Trust me this is one the most important reasons. Since otherwise if you loose your driver cd you are screwed. i can just enter the service tag mentioned under my laptop and get all updated drivers specifically for my laptop or i can choose the model no for any desktop or laptop and do the same even though this laptop has been discontinued. Hcls driver support is lame compared to that. forget discontinued models most of the time the site isnt functioning properly. and as an added advantage i can know all the components on my dell system so i can install that obscure linux distro without fretting too much about what the driver is for the component. same cant be said about hcl
2) There has been quite a bit of cribbing about how support is better by hcl employees. lately my laptops heat sink gave some problems. i went online chatted with the technical guy at dell and within 2 days a new part was delivered and a guy came to fix it. i just had to mention a time which was convenient for me. Correct me if i am wrong but that is good service. I wonder if hcl does that.
3)customisability- dell gives you the option to adjust the last component to your will from processor to the color. you get exactly what you want and dont end up paying for something you dont
4) Configuration-i checked their website and they talked about gaming laptops with 8200 m nvidia card. whom are you kidding. that is an entry level card. my laptop of over 1 and half years old and it has an 8600m gt nvidia card which is better. the current generation 9xxx series is also about to be replaced soon.
4) i wouldnt say looks are bad on hcl laptops that would be unfair but compared to others they seem outdated. Especially when they look like older models from other manufacturers
You are Spot on for most part of the comment. There is no comparision of Dell with HCL, After all, Dell is the worlds second largest Computer manufacturer (You know, HP has recently crossed Dell to be Number 1).
The customization is a big plus for Dell which isn’t present in HP too (or at least isn’t that easy as in case of Dell). But the only problem with Dell lappys is the weight factor. If it can bring that down some how, then you have the size zero looks of Sony with a badge of Dell – Perfect Combo.

I brought this Laptop off-the-self from Vijay Sales. No customization at all…..
I did ask for the Windows7 upgrade, but that was not available….I know that my Laptop is a P38, but not sure which variant. There’s no sticker or anything in the Laptop which would suggest the variant.
I did run a Belarc report for the Laptop, even that did not reveal anything.
How can i find the exact variant of my Laptop???
Ahh, there you are, laptops running with Vista are worthless especially at this moment,without the free Win 7 upgrade offer. Now I would say that you should have waited for 2 more days for laptops to come with pre installed Win 7.
If the properties of your computer didn’t reveal the version, you may try using the service tag code that your generally find the bottom at of the laptop beside the bar code. You may use that code and call the HCL support to find the exact version. (If it were a Dell, Sony, HP, Acer laptop, you can just find that out by typing that on their websites, I’m not sure if HCL Store has got that facility)

Actually, there are many variants in P38 series like P3864, P3857, P3858 etc… So I couldn’t guess which one did you go for.
Also none of the available P series laptops had a 2.2GHz processor, all they have is a 2.1GHz. Also, RAM was limited to 3GB.
To be frank, I couldn’t locate a product from P38 series based on your configuration including the OS, where most (or almost all) P38 had a free DOS but you mentioned Vista Home premium.
Chances are that those config details that you gave could be a bit exaggerated (for reasons unknown) or you could have customized your P38. But I don’t see an option to customize HCL laptops.
There are many more things to look at like:
Did HCL give you a free Windows 7 upgrade offer as the launch of Win 7 is only 3 days away from now
Is the monitor LED’d or just an age old TFT LCD?
So if the configurations that you gave are ‘really true’, then it looks like a good buy.

Yesterday on Diwali, i got my self and brand new Laptop. I had already made up my mind before i entered the showroom that i will be buying either Acer or Dell Inspiron. I wanted a laptop with good RAM and huge space so as i can run resource intensive application like Oracle on it. Going thru the various variety of laptop available, i finally got myself an HCL ME P38 laptop from vijay sales.

What is ‘Minimal cost’? You can get it only at the price the dealer sells. If you want to buy it for the making price, then you have to order it from the HCL Store online

As i told u about the RAM case. Just by adding 1GB RAM they quote Rs.32000 and same with antivirus issues also, when HCL PC’S are preloaded with Mcafee antivirus with media 1year for just Rs.60, Dell insists same 1yr Mcafee sc for Rs.1,300/- i hope technical guys understand, no need to use the security center when Microsoft windows is used. Regarding the leaptop weight factor, Let me tell u few parameters that will be considered :
1.) Screen size 2.) DVD drive 3.)keyboard. I understand ur feel, to decrease weight at laptop if i decrease the size of screen to 11/12″ instead 14″ will users accept? or if i provide 160GB HDD instead 320GB HDD will they accept..??? or if i provide low FSB(lesser than 2Ghz) processors is it fit to ur requirements…??? that they do in sony mobile technology series or sony lifestyle series check out… did the following config is avail with laptop (<2Kg) 320GBHDD,2GB RAM,14"Monitor, Front side Bus (FSB)speed not lesser than 2.0Ghz..
Dear Sriraj warmly i welcome ur comparison on inspiron and HCL Leaptops.. But i would like to know how u compared…??? Just with RAM (2GB and 3GB)… HCL Laptops 39series too ranges from Rs. 30,000/- (with 2GB of RAM,320GB HDD,2.0MP CAM), Do u know wat’s rate of additional 1GB RAM…?? is it Rs.2000/- will spend Rs.2000 extra just for 1GB RAM. probably no vendor gives u carrycase for Dell laptop… Even in Dell india website.. they are charging am i right…??? check out dear…

Again, I repeat the same thing, I didn’t ‘judge’ either Inspiron or HCL ME laptops to be better than the other.
From what I came to know by seeing all this is that, for you Mr.Gokulraj, all these reviews and social media is entirely a new field.
Because, the word ‘Ridiculous’ is nothing when compared to some other words fumed by users at companies. See Mouthshut website to get a ‘good taste’ of reviews posted by userds and possibly on your HCL products too. And I’d say, its natural and alright. There’s no hard and fast rule that everybody must like your products. If it is so, then there is no meaning for the word ‘competition’. Take all these reviews in a good way (even the harsh reviews that you may find else where) and try to improve your products.
And yes Dell doesn’t provide a carrying case for free except for the high end Studio models. I sincerely appreciate HCL if it provides such cases for all of its models.

It was just a comparison. Having said that, Inspiron laptops start from Rs.32000 and come with a 3GB RAM, where as the one I described in here way above that price and yet only 2GB of RAM.
Since you are emphasizing on the word ‘Mobile’ excitement, I felt it could have been still of a less weight. It should have been made below 2kgs, possibly like Sony’s lifestyle laptops, for you to make a mark with these range of Laptops.
Know the difference between the other brands Laptops and Leaptops:
Leaptops is not just like laptops,
Its generates less heat dissipation, because of new architecture of placing the components.

You liked when some of your HCLites self praised your products, but are unable to digest when some one says words like ‘Ridiculous’. You may have your own technology, every company has their own technology and we, as a end user, WILL compare each one of them and decide what is the best.
Specifically speaking the way some of the above comments (that coming from HCLites) are posted, they only meant to fool us. It could could have been very nice from their POV and HCL’s POV had they made their intro just like you saying I’m a HCL corporate MRE and gone further in saying the specialties of their products. But no, they just wanted to produce the image that they are one happy HCL customers and want to urge everyone else to buy a HCL product.

I some how feel that, few comments above are coming from HCL staff. Since the price is ridiculously high for a brand like HCL which is nothing compared to Dell, Sony or HP.

HCL is a very good brand and value for money. Other MNCs like DELL, HP, ACER are selling their laptops in higher rates in India. Surprisingly they are selling cheapest (low quality) models in Indian market. They are selling superier quality products in other countries.
I’m using HCL laptop for the past 2 year (Per day 8 hours minimum) and so far no hardware problem found. Performance is also good. They are charging minimum price for their model spares. DELL,HP is charging more than 5000 Rs for power adaptor alone. I’m suggesting you all for HCL laptop for all purpose.
