The first thing that I look at when a New Year comes is the calendar, especially at the dates of festivals. 2009 was a pretty good year in terms of holidays and placement of festivals compared to 2008 and 2007, where the festival day used to come bang in the middle of the week. In 2009, most of the festivals came near the week ends (Saturday and probably friday) or at the beginning of the week (Monday and probably Tuesday).
Let’s see what we have in store for 2010 calendar (I’m considering the South Indian festivals mainly)
Festivals and Holidays in 2010
January
Bhogi, Sankranti and Kanuma – 13, 14 and 15th. Those days came on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Nice, Saturday is anyhow an off day.
Republic Day – 26th came on Tuesday.
February
Maha Sivaratri – 12th came on Friday, Nice one too.
Milad ul Nabi and Holi – 27 and 28, came on Saturday and Sunday. Two wasted holidays I suppose.
March
Ugadi (Telugu New Year) – 16th, came on Tuesday, a leave on Monday would give me 3 holidays.
Srirama Navami – 24th came on Wednesday. Nothing much to say.
April
Good Friday – 2nd, you still want to know which day it came on?
Babu Jagjeevanram Jayanthi – 5th, came on Monday, very nice.
BR Ambedkar Jayanthi – 14th, came on Wednesday.
My Birthday – 30th
May
May day – 1st, came on Saturday, good.
June and July
You know pretty well, most people hate these months
August
Independence day – 15th came on a Sunday
September (Lets the festivals begin)
Sri Krishnashtami – 1st, came on Wednesday
Ramzan – 10th, came on Friday
Vinayaka Chavithi – 11th, came on Saturday
October
Gandhi Jayanthi – 2nd, came on Saturday
Durgashtami – 15th, came on Friday
Vijaya dasami (or Dussehra) – 17th, came on Sunday
November
Diwali – 5th, came on Friday
Bakrid – 17th, came on Wednesday
December
Vaikunta Ekadasi – 17th, came on Friday
Christmas – 25th, Came on Saturday.
So decide for yourselves, whether 2010 is better than 2009 in terms of holidays.
I wish a very happy new year to each one of you.
