by Harika on May 25, 2010

B.Pharm students who wish to go for higher studies in India will now have to sit for GPAT (Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test) entrance exam instead of the GATE entrance. Until 2009, B.Pharm students who wanted to do M.Pharm used to take the GATE Entrance test, but not any more. All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to conduct a separate entrance for Pharmacy candidates separating it from GATE.

As said, the first GPAT entrance exam was recently conducted on May 2, 2010 through the conducting University The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.

GPAT is the only official Entrance exam organized by AICTE for Master and Doctorate courses in Pharmacy in India. A good score in GPAT will give the student a chance to do their Masters’ in some of the reputed Universities and colleges in India.

Eligibility for GPAT entrance

Any candidate holding a full time (4 years, after 12th) B.Pharm degree or appearing for the final year exams in the year of conducting the GPAT, including those who made a lateral entry into B.Pharm through D.Pharm are eligible for the GPAT entrance.

GPAT entrance structure

It is an exam of 3 hours containing 100 questions, all of which are multiple choice questions. There is also a negative marking for wrong answers, which account for 1/3rd of the mark assigned to that question. The entrance will test the Aptitude of the candidate besides testing the basics of Pharmacy learnt in their Bachelors years.

Syllabus for the entrance will include every thing that you may have learnt in B.Pharm touching the subjects of Bio Chemistry, Clinical Pharmacy, Medicinal Chemistry, Microbiology, Natural Products, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence, Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology.

The GPAT entrance will be held once every year during the month of April/May and the scores of which are valid for only 1 year.
