Volkswagen Polo in India- Car preview and review

by Sai on September 17, 2009

The battle for small cars is all set to go to a new height next year as Volkswagen is all set to release its much awaited hatch back car ‘Polo’. Currently Maruti Suzuki is the supreme leader in India in small cars segment. However, Polo will be placed under the premier hatch segment, which is also a Maruti Suzuki’s strong hold, thanks to Swift. It is learnt that the Polo for India (or the name may be changed to suit the Indian market) will be exclusively made for the Indian car buyers separating from their International version of Polo.

This car will be slightly longer (than the UK model at 3916mm) giving much more leg room to the rear passengers. The Ground clearance will also be altered according to the Indian road conditions. VW also hopes to start the base model of the car from the price of Rs.4,25,000, which looks very good to compete even Swift and of course other small cars. VW aims at a market share of 10% in this segment which shows the expectations it has on Polo India.

VW-Polo-india The Polo for India may be offered with 2 petrol engines and a Diesel engine. The  choice of the power train is yet to be made. In the United Kingdom, the Petrol  version has a 1.2 litre engine delivering 60ps power, a 1.2 litre engine delivering  70ps power and a 1.4 litre engine delivering 80ps of power.

There are also 2 choices in the Diesel version, a 1.4 litre TDI engine delivering 70ps  power and a 1.4 TDI engine delivering 80ps power.

For the Indian version, along with a 5 speed manual gear shift, an Automatic gear shift is also being planned for the petrol version. If everything goes accordingly, we should see a VW Polo on our roads in the first quarter of 2010.

I’m surprised to hear that you are comparing the I20 with the VW Polo. Its really shocking how we, the ignorant Indian Consumers go with factors like interiors, mileage, design etc. etc. Its really surprising how one can compare Solid European engines with that of piddley Korean engines. Even behind the drivers seat, the Polo atleast feels like a CAR on the road in comparison to the I20 which feels like a I dont know what. I20 vs Polo—> 1)Mileage: I20 is rubbish (I’m telling you this cos I have the I20 Asta Option myself),2) Design: I20 is a regular Korean Design (probably a little modern touch has been given but nothing exquisite),3)Engine: Even though the Polo has a 3 cylinder 1200cc engine in comparison to the I20′s 4 cylinder 1200cc engine, the output of the engines are more or less the same. However if you ask me, because I’ve got both the machines, I’d say that the VW Polo will take the I20′s ass in straight line speed. & 4)Interiors and other features: OOh yeah, the I20 kicks the Polo’s ass hollow in this concern & nothing else. So, you tell me you call the I20 a value for money car. I’d say ‘ NO WAY JOSE.’
