TVS Jive test driven

by Sai on March 29, 2010

Who can forget Suzuki Samurai, the no problem bike? Why was it such a hit back then? Simply because it was an ‘easy to ride bike’. Although it did have gears, the bike itself was of such a low weight that you could almost do anything with Samurai. Now taking that easiness to the next level is the new ‘Jive’ from TVS Motors.

By now, it would be a well known fact that ‘Jive’ has no clutch (Auto clutch) on the left.

Jive test drive

tvs jive test drive It was extremely odd to hold only the handle on the left side by circling all the fingers around it. It was also odd while changing gears. But it was all settled once I got used to it and for most; it shouldn’t take more than a few kms of ride. The shifting of gears without the use of clutch is made possible by the use of T.Matic Auto Clutch. The gear box too is completely different to what we are usually accustomed to. You can shit from any gear to any gear directly with the knocking being extremely minimal (the knock like sound that you get when driving at low speeds in higher gears).

Any gear start is nothing new but to start it on gear without the use of clutch is something definitely new.

The overall ride, although felt a bit odd initially, was very pleasant.

The unavoidable Technical Stuff

Jive is powered by a 109.7cc engine with a peak power of 8.4bhp (Compare with Bajaj Discover 100cc and Passion Pro) and a peak torque of 8.3Nm (and comes with both electric and kick star options).

The Wheelbase is 1260mm with a ground clearance of 165mm. The body weight is 105kg and the fuel tank can take up 15 ltrs of petrol (way more than any of its competitors).

While the dealer in Hyderabad says that Jive can easily clock a Mileage of 80kmpl, I would say that one should be very happy if it gives 70 – 75kmpl.

The Ex-showroom price of Jive is Rs.41735.

I bought a ‘Jive’ four months back and after running three thousand odd kilometres, what I would say is that Jive overall is a neat and well thought-out and made-out package from TVS. Yes I would say that they did a pretty good job. A normal, yet good looking bike (though not an eye-catcher as such), with all basic paraphenalia plus electric stasrer at a very competitively priced and is a real good buy. The engine purr is smooth and the bike has good agronomics – quite comfortable with adequate shock absorption. One can expect a fuel efficiency of 60kmpl approx. in city traffic. Though I feel a lack of that little punch (throttle response) which you have from a 100cc bike with the conventional clutch, you would definitely not miss out on the most you can expect from a normal city commuter bike – driving ease and comfort with reasonably good mileage. (I shouldn’t, at the same time, miss out to compare this bike with the earstwhile hero honda street – which was a superb machine – a more refined one, delivering a little better mileage too, which unfortunaely didn’t click in the indian markets probably due to its small stature and the design. Whatever, I can recommend Jive to prospective commuter bike buyers for the extreme convenience and comfort it offers.
