Hyundai i20 Diesel launched

by Sai on July 7, 2009

Hyundai has announced the much awaited Diesel version of i20 in the ‘Swift’ category by introducing the new i20 CRDi. When I said that it was introduced in the Swift Category I had no apprehensions about its reverberations, since it is the category that has been dominated by Swift since quite a few years.

However, if one has to consider the prices then our little Skoda Fabia may also be shunned before the i20 Diesel.

I20 CRDi has been launched in 3 versions which are called by the same name as the petrol version namely, i20 CRDi Magna, i20 CRDi Asta and i20 CRDi Asta (O).

hyundai-i20-diesel

The Magna version starts at 6.2 Lac, Asta at 6.83 Lac and Asta (O) at 7.2 Lac.

But having said that the power is way high compared to Swift Diesel, if one had a look at the specifications of this specially tune CRDi engine, you would surely forget Swift for some time.

This new i20 Diesel with its 4 cylinder 1396cc engine delivers a maximum power of 90 bhp at 4000rpm and a torque of 224 Nm at 1750rpm.

Compare this with Swift Diesel whose maximum Power is only 75bhp at 4000rpm and torque is 190 Nm at 2000rpm and you’ll clearly feel the CRDi engine to be much responsive and give you that pick up to kill your Swift rivals in any Drag race.

However, one has to understand that Swift Diesel is only powered by a 1248cc engine where as the new i20 CRDi is powered by a 1396cc monster.

So it’s clear who the target buyers of this car this. Those who would like the performance of a Sedan to be clubbed with a Hatch. A perfect performer for the City traffic, keeping aside the price tag.

don’t know about the i20 but i’ve driven swift LDi at a speed of 160 kmph.
though it can move faster than 160, for my friends’ request it has been kept at 160 with complete control n without lack of any stability. with an average speed of 130 kmph it has given 16.5 kmpl.

Am planning to buy a Car,, and mostly its gonna be I20 Asta(o). The only thing i am concerned about is the mileage of I20…? I have driven a Swift Dzire which is quite zippy and powerful and also quite fuel efficient,, hence the same would go with Swift (abt Fuel efficiency) I am very inclined towards I20 but not sure abt its Fuel efficiency…? Better quality and Brand power of Hyundai and low maintenance makes I20 look a better option,,, but your advice will be very valuable…. Waiting to hear from u…

Thanks in advance

Using i20 CRDi over three weeks and and had already driven more than 1100 KM. My observation – rpm below 2 the Engine response is poor but with assistance from gear suggestion the performance is managable, got mileage around 14 yet to check after first service, very stable on road, always feeling of having complete control on road (tried with 120 speed), very impressive looks and gudgets, but felt some blindspots (may be due to gap in driving after a year of extensive driving Caavan in USA). Before purchasing it I test drive almost all the cars in this segmet (VW, Skoda, Ford, Nissan, Suzuki both) except Suzuki (Ritz was best in terms of engine response and gear, seating etc except for the horrible looks) I found all under powered and also not in the same class as i-20. So one has to find out what they want – performance, value for money, resale, maintainence than Suzuki has no parallel.
But i-20 has its own class and Hyundai presence is strong on Indian roads.

Folks,
I want to buy a new Hatch in Diesel Engine. I am pretty confused between Nissan Micra and Hyundai i20 and even Ford Figo. Budget is not an issue in my case, but I would really like to make a decision on the basis of Fuel Economy, Comfort (Leg Room + Boot Space), Maintainability and Features.

Your suggestions are awaited.
Thanx in advance.

Madhu

Although pretty dated compared to the other two, I would still go for i20.

Shitanshu

tell me about the fuel economy comparison between these cars which comes from the user rather than the company

sandeep

Hi i am planning to buy a car for around 6 or 7 lakhs rupees. Which car is currently good. I am planning to buy a diesel car.

Yes surely i20 crdi wins drag race, cause few days ago I had almost like a drag race with new swift mine i20 is also new. As the i20 is very responsive and good control of the road beat the swift it looked as if guy in the swift was draging the car to come first but no i was doing 140 on a bit uneven road. and I think he was doing 100 I was completely concentrating on the road not on the speedometer, all of a sudden my friend says hey ur doing 140 I was like what n saw the speedomenter and slowed down to 100, but I say you can easily outdo swift. And guys I have done a mileage check in city im getting 16-17 kmpl. Im really satisfied by the response of the car. I wud suggest this car who got money and need power.

thank u boss

Hi Dear
your comments are valuable. i am planning to buy a new car. which one do you suggest swift diesel or i20 diesel. If i20 then which model sportz or Asta ABS. I am Very confussed in these two cars, also comment on resale values of both.pls rply as soon as possible.

ganesh

ritz is very comfortable to drive and better utilisation of space. Very smooth gear shifting and you donot even know if the engine is on.good in mileage.

your comments are valuable. i am planning to buy a new car. which one do you suggest swift diesel or i20 diesel. i will traveling 800 km a month. also comment on resale values of both.

Sriraj

For such low mileage per month, I would seriously advice you to take a petrol version of either those cars.
If you still, insist on Diesel, i20 should be good. Both have about the same resale value.

I own an i-20 crdi since 5 months. 2nd service is still due. Since your travelling is more, i-20 diesel would be good for you as it gives 20 kmpl on highways if driven between 80 to 100 speed. This may definetely improve after 2nd and 3rd service. Power if pretty good on highways. But on hill stations and gradients, i feel power is insufficient. Pick increases after the engine rpm goes beyond 2000 rpm. Within this rpm, pick up is really bad, this can be felt on hill stations. But i am not sure whether this may be overcome after 2nd and 3rd service. Have a test drive and enquire about this before deciding. Otherwise, on normal roads, the vehicle is good. About the resale value, iam not sure.

Although initially hesitant, I am now truly amazed by how accurate the review you wrote about hyundai i20 Its weaknesses & strengths. I could never have spotted myself, and provides clear paths to improvements that need to be made. Will definitely consider reading more of your posts.
Thank you!

Hi Sriraj, Require a car for Mumbai city travel, usally im out of town for 6 months in a year, the car will sit idle for a month at a stretch, what will be a better buy the i20 diesel or the 1.2 lit petrol version of the i20, cost is not an issue here. really dont want the i20 1.4 lit auto transmission.

sriraj

The only reason why I recommend you a i20 petrol version is that the car will be idle for half a year. Which is not what is required for a diesel car. Diesel cars are meant for those who does a lot of travelling daily and keep the car busy.
I20 Petrol is the way to go.
I’m glad that you didn’t put swift in the comparison.
I20 is a great car by all means and is no less than Swift petrol. Even though its engine displacement is less than Swift’s, it delivers nearly the same power and torque.
Go for it.

Shubhodeep

decent…but could u point out how the car fares against dzire diesel….considering its priced just a little above the maruti car that runs on the same trustworthy diesel engine as the one in swift.?

sriraj

Dzire according to me is just nothing. It’s just a back dock attached to Swift and named Dzire. It simply looks like 2 cars being gelled together.
When I said that i20 Diesel is superior in performance compared to Swift, then it automatically means that it also beats Dzire. (Dzire’s performance is not quite the same as the Swift simply because of the extra weight added to the boot which make the car less zippy than the original)
