Take screen shots on Android Gingerbread phone for free (Galaxy SII)

Earlier I wrote about ‘Shoot Me’, an app that takes screen shots of your Android device. Sadly, that app is no longer available in the market (for reasons unknown) and the method described in that post (for froyo) doesn’t work for my current Gingerbread phone.

There are various paid apps in the market to take screen shots but why go for them when you can take a shot for free? It took some time trying various key formats but I finally figured how to capture shots on my Galaxy SII (and hopefully this is not just a Samsung thing and works with all Gingerbread phones).

All you need to do is press ‘Back’ (soft) button, Home button and Power button (you need not do it all at a time; simply first hold down the back key, then Home button and then holding down both, press Power button) to take a screen shot. It takes about a second to take the shot, so if you are taking a shot of a dynamic screen (like in a movie), you should take a bit earlier to capture the required screen.

The captured pictures can be seen in the Gallery in a separate folder ‘ScreenCapture’.
